Permits are generally required for projects that include structural, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical (HVAC) work. Other projects that would require a permit include roofing, demolition, fencing, and signage. We always recommend contacting our office if there are any questions regarding permit requirements.
Building Services operates Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM.

Any project that requires a building permit should be done by a contractor licensed with the City of Pittsburg unless the homeowner is doing their own work. If this is the case, the homeowner is required to sign and notarize an affidavit before issuance of their building permit. The homeowner is also required to be a resident of the property for at least 12 months after the work is completed.
All building permits expire 6 months after they are issued. Extensions can be requested and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Inspections can be scheduled by calling our office at 620-231-4170 or on our Building Inspections page. Inspections are on a first-come-first-served basis, so call at least 2 hours before you need an inspection in order to get on the schedule.
Behind 30 ft Front Yard Setback:
- Privacy fences 6 feet or under do not require a permit.
- Privacy fences taller than 6 feet require a permit but cannot exceed 8 feet tall.
- 95% pass-through fences (chain link) do not require a permit if under 6 feet.
In Front of 30 ft Front Yard Setback:
- Privacy fences must be 3 feet or under.
- 95% pass-through fences (chain link or similar) must be 4 feet or under.
General Rules:
- Barbed wire fences are only permitted in certain zoning districts within the city limits.
- Razor wire fences are not permitted within city limits.
- Electric fences are not permitted within city limits.
