Pittsburg Polar Plunge and Strut

On Saturday, February 10, individuals plunged into an icy pool to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. Sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), and the City of Pittsburg Police Department, the fundraiser drew multiple community groups together to support this worthy cause.
At a frosty 15 degrees, the weather outside was less than delightful, but attendees were not scared away. Participants warmed up with the 5K strut and competed in the costume contest, before braving the frigid swimming pool. After thawing out in the warming tents, teams enjoyed a bowl of chili at the Pittsburg Nazarene Church chili cook-off.
Pittsburg Police Sergeant Chris Moore says he hopes the great attendance this year will result in successful numbers for the fundraiser.
“We are hoping to raise $20,000 this year,” said Moore. “With all the funds going straight to Special Olympics through LETR, the actual event doesn’t cost anything to put on.”
Police Sergeant Chris Moore has played a significant role in raising support for the plunge and other LETR events in Pittsburg. In addition to his role as event organizer, Moore also serves as Kansas State Director of LETR and leads fundraising activities for Special Olympics Kansas.
One Pittsburg resident went the extra mile to raise money for the event. Fourteen-year-old Sean Hurst raised over $3,000 for Special Olympics athletes by mowing lawns and doing other odd jobs throughout the year.
Although the polar plunge takes place all over Kansas and the United States, Moore says the generosity of the Pittsburg community makes this event special.
“My favorite part of the event is just seeing everyone in southeast Kansas coming together for one reason, Special Olympics,” said Moore. “I just want to thank everyone who donated, participated and supported the great event.”
