About Us
The Public Works & Utilities Department oversees and manages a variety of municipal utility activities, including water treatment facilities, water storage, pump stations, distribution systems, wastewater collection, lift stations, wastewater treatment plant operations, and municipal storm sewer system, including collection and treatment. The Department is a profit center for the City and intended to emulate private enterprise regarding budgeting, re-investment, management and profitability.
The Public Works & Utilities Department establishes municipal utility and capital improvement projects and communicates with consulting engineers in the design of such projects, coordinates projects involving federal, state and local funding, supervises the construction and maintenance of water, wastewater and stormwater system improvements, participates in the preparation of the city’s capital improvement program and supervises the compilation of cost data and estimates. The Department submits information and communicates with federal and state agencies relative to meeting permits and compliance matters concerning federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations. The Department is charged with providing safe drinking water and disposal of wastes to protect public safety, health and welfare.
Regulatory Compliance
All utility activities are regulated and permitted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Water Rights are regulated by the Division of Water Resources, Kansas Department of Agriculture. Each of the utility operations demands separate reporting requirements for each permit and infrastructure component at unique intervals.
